Joshua 1:6 — “Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.”

We continue the intriguing saga of Joshua’s walk into the promised land. Joshua 1:6 states that the foundation of giving the inheritance of the land is the word of authority from God that gave the land to their fathers. Now after giving the unchangeableness of this promise a requirement is made to be strong and very courageous. There is never the receiving of a blessing without the requirement to be strong and courageous, or to be firm and steadfast. The reason for this requirement is seen in the next few chapters, where the enemies of Israel were occupying the land of Israel’s inheritance and the enemies contested Israel’s right to be there. Even if the gifts are given by God there must be firmness or strength of conviction and courage or the ability to be steadfast so that which is given is kept. That which is given as a gift or an inheritance must not be lost because of weakness or cowardice. There is no uncontested blessing or express trains from Egypt to Canaan. God’s requirement of strength and courage is His mercy displayed so that my character, my inner man, will conform to His Word not the world. He knows that the giving of inheritance is only the beginning and since the enemy has no power to alter my inheritance, he then must create fear and confusion so I am pushed back into a wilderness life of futility. So be strong and very courageous. This is my part as I serve notice to the devil that my days of weakness are over.

Joshua 1:6 — “Be strong and of good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.”

Ephesians 1:3 — “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly place in Christ:”

We continue with this spiritual adventure as Joshua begins to enter the land of promise. Joshua 1:6 says, “Be strong and of good courage; for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.” Joshua was given the sober responsibility of dividing the inheritance to the people that were walking in obedience to the commands of God. The paths of obedience lead to the receiving of the spiritual inheritance. Just as it was Joshua’s responsibility to give this inheritance to the obedient, the responsibility to give the spiritual inheritance to the church was given to Jesus. The only qualification to receive was to be obedient. No wander the Bible states to obey is better than sacrifice. The inheritance was the land where there was an abundance of all they needed. So too, we have available to us a spiritual land with every spiritual blessing as seen in Ephesians 1:3. This land that was given to Israel was a land to be occupied, possessed and subdued in this life. This means that blessings don’t just come in heaven after death or rapture, but that there is realm of abundance, and victory that God has for His children now. Joshua was told that this land was promised to their fathers to give them. The word “sware” is used in verse 6, which means “by the authority of”. In other words, “this land is given by my authority”. As you get prepared to receive your blessings, your inheritance, every attempt of the devil to short- circuit your miracle is repealed by this authority.
